In the past 24hrs I have been a force yet to be stopped. Painted from 8pm-2am.
Well maybe just a couple winks slowed. I woke up and continued, finishing 2 small 8x8pieces, all 10 candy corn for comic con and all the sketches to go along with.

It's gonna be a long night in the tolls and my right brain is so swollen I can't shut it down. I feel like my right hand is going to cripple before my catharsis.
Good thing I'm half decent with the left!

what i learned today:

When i was eleven years old, i wanted to be a painter, a punk rocker and a psychologist.

The summer of that year and several years to come, i spent every wednesday with an older Phillipino man. His name was Lito Ballesteros. Even though he didn't paint stuff i thought was cool, you could see/feel the emotions exude from a still life, you could follow a path of swirling colors to your own heart from an enormous dragonfly. i will probably never express what a hippie i am about painting with emotions again.

i painted some weird stuff when i was in his classes initially. like he'd bring in his old army jump boots. i still have the painting. why i painted disproportional plaid behind it, i will never know. but the boots came out alright. i felt they were perfect at the time. like i felt like i was done painting them. he told me it wasn't finished. IN FACT the plaiddish mess was probably my easy way out. the same way i STILL DO. it honestly just makes it hard to stare at anything other than the boots. it's been in my closet(s) for the better part of 15 years. it's embarrassing how far i've come and i usually keep it hidden, but i had always kept it, b/c it was his boots i'd painted and someday i'd planned on passing it back to him, when i was famous or huge, or even had a minor cult following, just when i'd felt successful maybe, maybe just an 18x24 thank you card.

He taught me what it meant to express myself without blatantly painting how i felt. i didn't need to paint angry images, i could paint angry colors or relieve it through making it symbolic and letting it go, no matter how long it took to complete something. I could paint the full 5 hours just listening to him tell me stories about how he'd traveled and learned more about himself from other people than he could ever realize on his own. He would document movements in his life with symbolism, and color. certain feelings, certain people all had their own representation. amazing logic to let everything go and give it all up on a canvas. like vomiting without all the mess.

Truth is, i've seen him since his classes. which were more about catharsis and army stories and about the funny things he'd seen over the years, than they were about skill building... but anyhow, i'd see him around town, about the supermarket, in the deli, never having the hours i'd needed to catch up. but he'd always nodded to me, the weird little girl who painted fire and chains, and something resembling the little bic guy from the pens, other weird people with weird haircuts. i'd been planning on contacting him about my shows that have now passed, and even 6 months on, i'd always hoped to see him again, never thinking i might not see him, i mean he had to be in his 60's, and there's no way he would move into another plane.

sadly, to my surprise in my search for his email tonight, i find this:

Elito “Lito” Ballesteros, an acclaimed and well-loved Filipino painter and one of the founders of the New York-based Society of Philippine-American Artists (SPAA), died of congestive heart failure on June 7 at Park Manor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Middletown, N.Y. He was 68. The grandson of Fernando Amorsolo, Ballesteros grew up with the world-famous Filipino painter in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. He was also an active member of Mason, Gramercy Lodge No. 537. A multi-faceted talent, he had numerous solo and group exhibits in the US.

Born on Nov. 24, 1940, Ballesteros had been battling bone marrow cancer for the past year and a half, and was in and out of the hospital for blood transfusion. He was a retired US Navy personnel who served in the Vietnam War from 1960 to 1967 as a steward to a military general. Interment is scheduled June 13 day at Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, N.Y., following an 11 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph Church.

really just punched me in the chest right now. and probably every time i read it.

i'd really meant for so many years to stop by and at least say hello.

maybe get in a couple words of thanks, or even for advice.

but i never did.

i never wanted to intrude.

i would really like to stop by now.

maybe say hello to his wife and tell her how much her husband had inspired me to do what "felt right".

but i think it's a devastating loss, and i wouldn't want to make someone relive that.

i plan to contact the tutubi gallery partner and relay how much he's meant to me over the years.

he was really crazy about these goddamn dragonflies.

maybe that'll be my next animal totem adventure.

after all the dragonfly is the light and color of transformation and the message carrier of wisdom and enlightenment.

thank you mister for allowing me to express my emotions and see through my bullshit.

but i feel compelled to update the one person that reads this on their lunch every day.

i've been working very closely with AmbioMedia doing a press kit for one, Patti Stren.

it's been a great project. it forced a much needed growth for me.

now that the first round of kits went out, i feel it's important to notify myself and the world that i am once again conquering fears and inevitability.

it's lead me to digital media as a whole. or reacquainted me.

although i'm not going to post my work, i'm very proud of the outcome.

i intend on doing a lot more, now that i'm determined to buy my macbook.

i need to take my design eye a little more seriously and leave the sillies for the illustration.

catharsis achieved.

About having my first solo show!
Amazing people coming Out to keep my spirits up!
Got a lot of compliments and love them all from the depths of my soul.
I've been encouraged to work bigger. I am planning on it.
Tons more stuff to come as I continue to grow, beat my own self-deprecated delusions and run like the wind into some form of personal self serving success, if you're with me get on the boat before I haul away.
I feel great and I feel like I never wanna stop.
In short, I let down all of my walls and exposed my entire being to a bunch of potentially influential people and I'm physically exhausted, my mind is still reeling!

The road has been long and hard. I am weary but felt the need to send this missive post haste. Enoch is sick with dysentery, and we have lost many supplies attempting to ford a river. There have been good times, though. While hunting, I "accidentally" shot three toes off Daniel's foot. He did complain quite a bit. You were right when we left, he is a bit of a 'loopy cunt'.
At the saloon in Fort Hall, a ruffian tried to rummage in my pantaloons, muttering about wanting 'dat sweet, sweet candy'. Luckily the ruffian stopped his incessant rummaging as I brained him with a cobblestone. I also shit in his hat to teach him a lesson.
Oh Clementine, my eyes grow weary, so I will end this missive shortly. I hope it finds you in good health and fiery spirits, and not the kind of fiery spirits this one brown savage dirt worshiper sold me near Laramie. Fire water my ass, it was bison piss.

when i started this... i hated everything about it.

i've never had to draw a stupid, jerk faced tiger.

(never been fond of animals in any way, until i started this totem project)

i hated meeting someone who had walls covered in tigers the day after.

all in all, this piece made me wanna throw up until this monday/tuesday.

i hadn't realized 4 hours had passed and i was actually running out of black paint.

i got so fixated.

regardless, i kinda stuck through it, determined that eventually i will have done ALL of the animal totem, that eventually i was gonna have to face this.

so i devoted myself.

and learned something.

and now i'm in love.

just a little desription of how many people really pumped life into this show.
it was anormous and a lot to take in.
it was nice to see all kinds of different things, and to know that if 1/10 of the bullshit crap artwork i saw is successful, i will be.
not to knock anyone's work there, but i would be embarrassed if my name were on say... 30%-40% of it.
it was also nice to see one, count 'em one robot pieces. it factually overjoyed me. i mean, granted all i wanna paint is weird monstery things and robots, it's just nice to see that with that being a pool of artists who get more play than i do, i'm doing something not done and WELL. maybe i've missed the boat. maybe i'm steering it.

it was an amazing night overall, but i just wanted to give my comments, and that i was more intrigued by the actual military historical collection than i was 1/2 the work going on there. so in summation, i could paint an elf vagina or a giant splattered tomato, and make 500 bucks. awesome.

so i'm halfway done with this. i wanna put some cutesy things on the right, tattoo flash style.

later you'll see why i titled this the to do list.

also-not to point out my faults but i need to stop and look at my work before i proceed. working from my bed gives some of my work tunnel vision type proportion. this is a prime example. after re-evaluating what i wanted to do with the piece, i decided to leave the hands as small as i'd drawn them in. it will work with the heavy right side better... BUT the original illustration had a gorgeous proportion that balanced it well.

i will be breaking out the table top easel soon b/c this drove me nuts until i figured out where it was going to go.

all in all, i think this piece is amazing. so far.

i made something cute, gross.

anyhow. i'm trying to keep the top layer's transparency with the backgroud isolated to the tag object, with no luck.

so here it is, in bloody concrete form.

i like how it feels without the hard outlines too. just wishing i could have a possibly black background. ugh.

xmas got me off track, i was doing soooo well.

steph, i totally stole your idea, plus something i created that resembled a loaf of bread which just makes me giggly, but i couldn't come up with anything this morning for myself, and i woke up with a desperation to keep motivated..... for some silly reason.

but i did do some squigglies on paper, going to try to bring them here tomorrow!

this would be the very first of the fliers i'm doing for this event (seeing as how it is my own). i'm not too pleased with it, i think i got a little carried away and i'm currently doing several to improve on the general idea and elements to try and simplify and clean it up. generally, i feel this one is way too busy for my personal tastes.

-to the bottom-

this is the second version of the same idea. i'm really happy with this one, secretly wishing i could keep the scale and have room for some symmetric sponsorship and donation information, but alas, i will have to figure something else out.
